Rooted in the ongoing research behind The Imperfect Atlas and expanded through his platform @come_see_real_flowers, this series considers flowers as both natural specimens and cultural artefacts. Continuing his atlas-like investigations and “impossible inventories,” Funch explores the shifting boundary between documentation, imagination, and ecological precarity.

Isolated against sheets of paper, each flower occupies a space between science and art, suspended from its immediate context yet carrying the imprint of its origins: its journey through global trade, the environmental pressures shaping its form, the cultural expectations projected onto its beauty. Through repeated observation and precise attention, Funch traces the subtle transformations each bloom undergoes, turning every image into a fragment of a wider ecological narrative.

The project addresses the Anthropocene relying on sustained, attentive looking. Revealing how fragility, displacement, and adaptation accumulate within a single stem. In this way, the flowers become quiet witnesses to a world in transition.
